Terminating decimals:

These are decimals that have a clear end. They stop after a certain number of digits after the decimal point. For example, $0.75$ stops after two decimal places.

More examples of terminating decimals:

• $0.5$
• $-79.25$
• $0.84935$

Non-terminating decimals:

These decimals keep going and don’t stop. For example, $\mathrm{0.333...}$ goes on forever, indicated by the three dots. This shows that the number does not have a final digit.

More examples of non-terminating decimal:

• $\mathrm{1.666...}$
• $\mathrm{0.272728...}$
• $-\mathrm{5.123172...}$

So, terminating decimals have a finish line, they stop.

Non-terminating decimals keep running; they never stop.
