How do you solve problems involving subtraction of fractions using appropriate problem solving strategies?

To solve problems involving subtraction of fractions, you should follow these steps:

Step 1: Check the denominators
- If the denominators are the same: You can just subtract the numerators.

- If the denominators are different: You need to make them the same. This is called finding a common denominator.

Step 2: Find a common denominator
Finding a common denominator means finding a number that both denominators can divide into evenly.

The common denominator of 3 and 4 is 12. You convert each fraction by multiplying both the numerator and the denominator of each fraction by the number it takes to turn the original denominator into the common denominator. Now you can convert each fraction:

Step 3: Subtract the fractions

Step 4: Simplify the fraction
If the numerator and denominator have common factors, you can simplify the fraction. 5 and 12 don't have any common factors. is therefore the answer in this case.
