How do you divide a decimal with 1 decimal place by a whole number?

When dividing a decimal by a whole number, it isn't necessary to adjust the numbers before beginning the division process.

You can use long division, but it's really important to watch where the decimal point goes.

This is how you handle the decimal point in long division:

1.  Identify the decimal point:

Before you begin the division, locate the decimal point in the dividend (the number you are dividing).

2. Position the decimal point in the quotient:

As you set up your long division, align the decimal point in the quotient (answer) directly above its position in the dividend as soon as you start dividing.

3. Continue the division process:

Proceed with the division as usual after establishing where the decimal point lies.

Example:

For instance, if dividing 78.3 by 9 using long division:

image
  • Step 1: Notice the decimal point in 78.3 and immediately position the decimal point in the quotient line of your long division setup.

  • Step 2: Divide 78 by 9, which goes into 78 approximately 8 times (since 9 x 8 = 72). Write the 8 in the quotient above the last whole number before the decimal.

  • Step 3: Subtract 72 from 78, giving a remainder of 6. Bring down the next digit (3 from the decimal part), making it 63.

  • Step 4: Continue by dividing 63 by 9, which equals 7. Write this 7 in the quotient immediately after the decimal point, completing the division.

Answer:

Conclusion:

Handling the decimal point correctly when you're doing long division is really important to get the right answer. When you make sure the decimal point in your answer is right above the decimal point in the number you're dividing, you're making sure your answer is correct.
