A mixed number is a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction.

Like here where $2\frac{1}{5}$ means 2 whole chocolate bars and $\frac{1}{5}$ of another chocolate bar.

Example: 

Let’s solve this task: $2\frac{1}{5}+6\frac{3}{5}$

Step 1: Add the whole numbers

2 + 6 = 8

Step 2: Add the fractions

Since both fractions have the same denominator, you can just add the numerators:

$\frac{1}{5}+\frac{3}{5}=\frac{4}{5}$

Step 3: Put all together

Now, combine the whole numbers and the fraction:

$8+\frac{4}{5}=8\frac{4}{5}$

You're done!

$2\frac{1}{5}+6\frac{3}{5}=8\frac{4}{5}$

This means you have 8 whole chocolate bars and $\frac{4}{5}$ of another chocolate bar.

2. Add the fractions (make sure they have the same denominator)
3. Combine the whole numbers and the fraction

Important:

• You don’t need to regroup when the fractions add up to less than 1
